A little Reprise about Coffee

I wrote this post about a year ago, but am in the reconsidering stages of my decision to, "Just Say No." So I decided to repost and see if I could get any new tips and/or arguments!

Enjoy!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~
I read a post this morning called "Why I Drink". Well if you are a mother, there is not need to inquire further upon that statement. If we have children, if we have husbands, if we have pets....it's impossible to make it through the duties of wife and mother without a LARGE glass of wine from time to time. (Can I get an Amen!!!)
Then I began to think about my own mother. Although I do remember there being a box of White Zin, (Why yes, I did just say a box. My mama was classy!)I don't recall seeing her drink NEARLY as often as I've witnessed most mothers to do these days. Granted my mother was practically a saint....or so I believed and chose to continue believing... So I questioned this. Since current day mothers now get by with our wine, how did my mom do it? EPIPHANY!!!! She drank coffee! Sigh........
I have, for many years now, been REFUSING to become a coffee drinker. Although my nose perks up and I and savor the scent every time I come in contact with that evil enticing liquid, the moment it makes contact with my mouth I have a natural reaction to spit out the entire sip. (Serious question here! Why does coffee not taste as wonderful as it smells? That's deceiving!) But in addition to the sludge flavor, I refuse to evoke a new addiction. I've had friends, family and co-workers try to convert me. My response being, "I will NOT give in to your peer pressure!!!" (Way to sound like a seasoned teenager eh!)
But back to thinking about my mother, and all these mothers...and heck, let's take it a step further, all my new found internet friends, blog writers, blog readers, mothers, aspiring authors, etc.. There is one thing in common with each and every one of you. Yes, you guessed it! You are ALL evil coffee drinkers! *GASP* I mean seriously, one of my favorite blogs, Pajama's and Coffee, even has the damn word in her title!!!!
Am I truly that naive? Have you all been trying to convert me for better reasons than just peer pressure? Have I been failing to answer the call to the best little bean to hit the earth? (Seriously...It hits the earth, it grows...ok bad joke!) Why have I been fighting so hard? **Bows her head in shame**
So here is the real question kids...answer truthfully...is Coffee really the secret to success? Does it truly make you a better writer, mother, wife, etc....? Tell me....Tell Me...TELL ME!!!
Ah, coffee...ambrosia for morning pains. It doesn't necessarily make me a better wife or mother or teacher or writer, but it does make me happier. I don't even think it is the caffeine, since I'm just as happy with decaf. I just enjoy the comfort and familiarity of it - the taste, the hot liquid to wake me up and warm me. It soothes me and my grumpy morning moods (and afternoon moods and early evening moods...) :-)
I like the occasional mocha frappe, but I have three things holding me back from becoming a full blown coffee drinker:
1.) The hassle. One more appliance to use/clean.
2.) The taste. Not a huge fan. I like my mochas heavy on the chocolate.
3.) The dependence. My friends who are heavy coffee drinkers cannot function in the morning until they have their coffee. I have a hard enough time pulling it together as it is. Add in a caffeine addiction, and it wouldn't be pretty.
Coffee is not the secret to success. I am currently in the weening process. I gave up pop (it feels so good to talk to a fellow Michigander and be able to use pop) a few weeks ago and now coffee's in the gallows. This time next week, my secret to success will be water.
I can't stand the taste of the stuff. I love the smell and I desire to be a cool coffee drinker, but I just don't like it. Blech.
I wouldn't suck back the stuff all day, but that first sip in the morning... ahhh. Nectar of the gods. You can enjoy just about anything in moderation.
5 cups of coffee per day helps keep Alzheimer's away! Well, at least that's the latest news about coffee.
As for me, I like my coffee, though normally only one cup per day during the week. Also, once per week I get Starbucks. Yum. Okay, sometimes twice a week.
To me, coffee is sort of a comfort food. I just like knowing there's a cup next to the computer, on the weekends, when I'm writing. And, in the spring, summer, fall, I like to have my first cup of the day outside, listening/watching the birds, and just relaxing.
Well I "Was" like you... hated coffee, the taste, even the smell made sick... I drank tea, a civilized drink. All through college, and two kids.
It was not until having my third child... that one morning after a deadly up all night with the wee one and two little ones kicking me in my "sleep" did my hubby's morning brew call to me. I was so tired and so I drank the java goodness. I have never looked back. I sit every morning drinking two delish cup's before I venture off to the daily chaos of my house. It is my calm before the storm so to speak. It makes me wake up and able to be "alert" with the kids. I can't have more than 3 cups a day, it makes me shake and just too jittery.
So come to the java dark side...
Now- disclaimer- we drink really expensive stuff so maybe if you tried some really good stuff maybe a vanilla latte, brevie latte's are great too...Ok I better go drink my second cup ;)
I'm not a fan of coffee by itself, but add a flavored creamer, like peppermint truffle mocha, or raspberry whith chocolate, and I'm an addict. You still get that wonderful coffee smell in the morning (which I heard somewhere, is good for asthsmatics ), but you get the caffeine you crave to get you going, something to warm you up (or cool you down in the summer if you ice it), and those delicious flavors. Although, I'm sure the "coffee purists" won't agree.
Oh coffee, how I love thee . . . . I quit coffee during both of my pregnancies, but I always went running back once the kids popped out. I manage to only drink 2 - 4 cups a day instead of the whole pot like I did a few years back. Seriously, that first cup is sooooo heavenly. No way would I give it up again. Caffeine is a drug, a legal one of course, but my students are amused that their teacher is addicted to drugs -- just caffeine, I promise!
I love coffee. Especially flavored coffee. I'm trying to cut back to only a few cups a week. Meaning less than one a day. I'm trying to do more tea because it's better for me, but jeez, it's hard. It's my comfort drink. Don't get addicted if you can avoid it. ;)
Ha, ha, ha! You are hilarious Marybeth. I don't drink coffee. Of course I'm not exactly a success either, but I'm trying. :) Why not drink hot chocolate? It's hot and sweet, and full of CHOCOLATE. What's not to like? Coffee is like its bitter older sister.
Hmm... I don't drink coffee. Nor do I drink wine. My elixir of choice is Ginger Ale, but since I'm dieting, I'm reduced to plain old water.
And I'm not uber-successful either, so take it for what you will!
