I'm a Mean Mom...Just so You Know!

Why is it that the day that I NEED to write my son decides all his toys are boring? Ok well he thinks that every day, but today it happens with tears.

Tears because his legos aren't fun.

Tears because he played with his cars yesterday.

Tears because he doesn't want to color.

So I said to him, "Well if you don't like your toys that much, I am going to call Santa and tell him he doesn't need to bring you any toys this year because you don't like them."

Tears again.

"But I do want new toys for Christmas!"

So I say, "Then show me you enjoy playing with them!"

It didn't work.

Should I resort to TV to get my work done? I really don't like resorting to the TV.

I decide to compromise.

"If you go play with your toys for a half hour you can watch TV for a half hour." I said.

So he comes in my room 2 minutes later and says, "Look, I made this yesterday." as he holds up a lego car.

Seriously. I don't want to know what he did yesterday! I want him to play with his toys today!

Why didn't I send him to preschool this year again?

You know, I have the exact same problem with my Chihuahua. And my cat can be a pain in the ass, too.

He just wants some attention Mommy!

My boys would be like this and it meant that what they needed was for me to sit with them on the floor and play with them. I hate to say it, but it's true.

Sounds like you need focused play time together and then a sitter!

I do understand your frustrations. I have great respect for any mom who tries to mother AND write.

I do concur ... off to entertain a four year old and await nap time!

*hugs* Parenting is one of the hardest jobs out there, but so worth it. Nap time is a wonderful time--you both get breaks. :D

LOL. I had three like that. I'm not opposed to TV exile. My kids are fine. Mostly.

I think my Mom enjoyed nap time more than my siblings and I. In fact, even after we were past the napping stage, Mom kept on with her regular naps - every day, pretty much at the same time. I guess after four kids, she took what peace and quiet she could get.

As for your 4 year old . . . well, sorry, no help here. Perhaps you could have him run around the house 500 times, then he would be tired, and really sleep well. : )

There are some days when my little ones can play with like creative angels. Then other days when I can't type a sentence without someone bickering or saying they're bored! I feel for you! It is so tough to balance being mom and writer!

It doesn't change as they get older. My teenagers practically ignore me when I am in the house - until I am writing and then they want to talk.

Like Amy, I've found my teens will come talk to me while writing, but then ignore me otherwise! Weird.

I'm pretty sure they do it on purpose. Just like how you can't wake them up for anything on the week days but then they wake up early every day on the weekends or vacation.

It's a conspiracy to make us go crazy I tell ya!!!

Your son cracks me up. So do you. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in your house one day. :)

LOL You poor thing! My kids do it too...
The one lady had good advice about sitting and playing with him. I have a little trick with my kids. When they're not getting lost in playtime, I have to jumpstart their imagination. Takes about five minutes or less. I just go in there, pick up some dinosaurs or pirates or legos, whatever, and I start playing. You know, making fighting noises, etc. Pretty soon, my son wants to take over and then I usually get a break. They just need that little help, sometimes, I think.
Could be your son just wanted to cuddle too, which ruins the writing but makes for a happy child. :-) Good luck today!

We have that problem sometimes too. Luckily my girls are never bored by crayons and paper so we always have art time to fall back on. But there is some TV watching too. Some days there is A LOT of TV watching. :)
