Is Coffee the Key to Success?

I read a post this morning called "Why I Drink". Well if you are a mother, there is not need to inquire further upon that statement. If we have children, if we have husbands, if we have pets....it's impossible to make it through the duties of wife and mother without a LARGE glass of wine from time to time. (Can I get an Amen!!!)

Then I began to think about my own mother. Although I do remember there being a box of White Zin, (Why yes, I did just say a box. My mama was classy!)I don't recall seeing her drink NEARLY as often as I've witnessed most mothers to do these days. Granted my mother was practically a saint....or so I believed and chose to continue believing... So I questioned this. Since current day mothers now get by with our wine, how did my mom do it? EPIPHANY!!!! She drank coffee! Sigh........

I have, for many years now, been REFUSING to become a coffee drinker. Although my nose perks up and I and savor the scent every time I come in contact with that evil enticing liquid, the moment it makes contact with my mouth I have a natural reaction to spit out the entire sip. (Serious question here! Why does coffee not taste as wonderful as it smells? That's deceiving!) But in addition to the sludge flavor, I refuse to evoke a new addiction. I've had friends, family and co-workers try to convert me. My response being, "I will NOT give in to your peer pressure!!!" (Way to sound like a seasoned teenager eh!)

But back to thinking about my mother, and all these mothers...and heck, let's take it a step further, all my new found internet friends, blog writers, blog readers, mothers, aspiring authors, etc.. There is one thing in common with each and every one of you. Yes, you guessed it! You are ALL evil coffee drinkers! *GASP* I mean seriously, one of my favorite blogs, Pajama's and Coffee, even has the damn word in her title!!!!

Am I truly that naive? Have you all been trying to convert me for better reasons than just peer pressure? Have I been failing to answer the call to the best little bean to hit the earth? (Seriously...It hits the earth, it grows...ok bad joke!) Why have I been fighting so hard? **Bows her head in shame**

So here is the real question kids...answer truthfully...is Coffee really the secret to success? Does it truly make you a better writer, mother, wife, etc....? Tell me....Tell Me...TELL ME!!!

I don't know if it is the secret to success...and I am pretty sure it does not make you a better Mom (though, I still have 10 days left until I will actually be a Mom). However, for some of us, is just a luxury we enjoy. For the last nine months I have completely abstained from my beloved java...actually went cold-turkey when I found out my husband and I were expecting (that made the first few weeks of pregnancy *extra* enjoyable for my poor husband, lol). Now I find I miss the taste (it's an acquired taste, btw). However, more than that, I really just miss the act of drinking coffee. For me, drinking coffee was something I did while mentally preparing for my day and something I did while unwinding my nerves near mid-afternoon. It was part of my relaxation routine -- the "me" time that helped me get through my day. That might be why so many Moms enjoy it...it's a part of their "me" time...something they do for themselves.

So, if you really hate coffee, I wouldn't feel compelled to learn to love it. I just think for some of us, it's just a matter of taste and sanity.

Great, now I really want a big cup of coffee. :)

Coffee is the secret to waking up in the morning.

But when you put it like that, it sounds so warm and inviting...sigh...

And do not fear, 10 days will go by way fast and when they are done you''ll ask where they went!!

Congrats on being a new mom :)

"The first part of waking up...is Folgers in your cup!"

Something like that Jessica? Ewe to Folgers though, I'd need something flavored if I was going to attempt to consume....

You know that 0% motivation you were referring to earlier? Yeah, coffee actually HELPS that!

And there are some fantastically delicious creamers out there that have....wait for it...only 15 cals per serving! Oh yeah, coffee is my FRIEND!

I can't handle caffeine at all, so I am among the lame-o coffee drinkers who drinks decaf. That is, I drink coffee (should that be koffee? since it's not real?) for the taste not for the jazz. It does smell so good! And if you put a heaping lode of half-and-half in it along with some sweetener or flavoring? Yum. BTW, I did used to drink caffeine, and then I realized it wasn't helping with my mood swings AT ALL. Wine, though? There's the elixir of the gods. Love that your mom had a BOX of it.

Crystal, I have NO idea what 0% motivation you speak of???? ;)

JennyPenny, you drink it for the taste?!?!!? Is that possible.

Yeah I'm not so sure about the caffeine either....seems a bit evil to me? Can I just stick with wine? Why can't you drink that first thing in the morning!!!

**Disclaimer** Marybeth does NOT drink wine first thing in the morning....regardless of how helpful it sounds!

While I am not sure it makes me a better mother, it sure helps to be an alert mother in the morning! It is certainly an acquired taste and you need to have the good stuff to appreciate it! There is a BIG difference between coffee and good coffee!!

I justify my coffee habit by telling myself that it's a lot better than drinking pop everyday! As my mother continually points out (and yes, she's a coffee drinker too), pop pulls the calcium from your bones (and heaven only knows what else it does!). So, if I have to stick with something, it'll be coffee and tea!

Wine in the morning...that sounds good. As for coffee...only a real coffee drinker drinks it black!!! And the plus...that's 0 added calories!
As for mom...she left us! Literally, ask the eldest sister, mom confessed to her!

I'd like to think my secret to success is the combo of coffee in the am, coffee in the afternoon and wine in the pm. That usually does the trick for me. Dunkin' donuts coffee is my true love. That plus a bit of coffee mate creamer and I am good to go. Mmmmm... better get some on now!

Seriously though- if you don't like it, don't start drinking it. Drink Jolt or Red Bull. ;)

Most common response I am hearing through all of this: Coffee is an acquired taste.

Conclusion!

Beer, an acquired taste as well. I've grown to like beer....

Hmmmmmmmmmmm??????????????

Brian(code name for sister full of snide comments) What do you mean our mother left us? She's still here, I just saw her the other day. You've lost your mind! (Too much wine maybe????)

Coffee is probably an acquired taste...I just acquired it when I was in high school. And trust me when I say that GOOD coffee tastes like it smells, and bad coffee generally tastes bitter... (And Starbucks either tastes like it's burned or it tastes like the devil. But I digress).

Coffee has, however, become slightly more of an enemy than a friend. I found, much later in college, after surviving only on coffee and Cheesy Mac, that coffee gives me anxiety attacks. The caffeine. It sucks, because I love coffee. very, VERY, much. But now I can feel that stupid caffeine, that makes everyone else so productive and happy, making me into a shaky, anxious, panicky person. Sometimes, just one lovely latte will do it.

So beware...as much as I love coffee...if you drink too much of it for too long, it can do bad things to do. And then you have to break up with coffee...which is very very sad. You have to cheat on coffee with tea, which is just not as much fun.

Yay.

PS: Coffee, I still love you, I swear...don't leave me. Tea means nothing to me. Nothing, I tell you!!

Jess,

I totally understand. That's how I feel when I drink beer. And no one wants to be a cheater right!!! So it's best for me just to stick with the wine. (Although let's face it, when one of those sultry sexy margaritas is staring me in the face...there is nothing I can do to help myself!) Believe me, if wine can forgive me, Coffee can forgive you!

***Look at all these wonderful lessons I've learned today!!!***

I can't say no to margaritas either, the sluts. lol But wine and I have an understanding. Wine knows that in the summer, when beer just looks SO good, that nice tall glass of frosty beverage on a hot day, I recommence my relationship with beer. Wine just has to share me in the summer.

First of all...Amen! Next, I didn't start drinking coffee until my second kid was born. It became a necessity in order to stay awake to care for kid 1. Now, it's just a happy little 10minutes out of my day just for me. I wait until everyone is happy and sit down to drink. It makes me happy, energized and ready to face the inevitable challenges of the day.
All the cool kids are doing it...

I am so happy I was an inspiration for this post. I have a coffee maker, but I rarely use it. I enjoy it in the winter to warm up my bones with french vanilla creamer. Yummy goodness, but now that it is getting warmer out, I like to drink wine coolers.

I drink a few wine coolers a week. I drink my milk and water, so it is all good!

Coffee is certainly NOT the secret to success. It's just the caffeine in it that gives you the little push to get going in the morning...as for me, I drink a can of Coke instead ;-)
